Primary School Upgrade

The Surin Foundation’s Christian kindergarten Project is a vision to start a new school that will provide bi-lingual (English and Thai), international standard academic education guided by Christian teaching and values, for disadvantaged children in Phrao.

The school will be located in Phrao town (90 km North West of Chiang Mai). Greater Phrao has a population of over 50,000 people, and is an intersecting point for people of different backgrounds including Thais, Chinese and hill tribe communities from the surrounding mountains.

The initial stage of the project will consist of nursery and kindergarten facilities. It is intended that the project will be expanded to Primary School level in the future as funding becomes available.

The project stems from two main areas of need:

1)      Firstly, families of all religious backgrounds seeking international standard English education for their children. The country’s transition from a subsistence economy to an industrialized nation has led to an increasing number of parents in Phrao who are concerned about the academic development of their children in a rural town where the academic standard can sometimes be 2-3 grades behind that of schools in Chiang Mai. At the Surin Foundation’s Kindergarten, all classes will be conducted in English and Thai, with the option of Chinese, to ensure fluency in language and give the children the best opportunity in life.

2)      Secondly, families seeking a Christian component in their children’s curriculum. The kindergarten will ensure that the child’s faith journey and academic development go hand in hand. Through the Surin Foundation’s kindergarten, our aspiration is to give a positive experience of the Christian faith to the students, parents and staff, which will encourage them to consider a relationship with a loving God, and in turn motivate them to acts of benevolence, love, and benefit to the society which will help to alleviate some of the social problems such as alcohol abuse, divorce, child abuse, and recruitment into the sex trade.

Our philosophy is hence, that education will give the child the best opportunity in life and a fruitful career. Spiritual formation will teach the child how to use their education in a beneficial way, and make the most of their lives.

To see this vision fulfilled, the Surin Foundation purchased a 4 Rai block of land in January 2010 to build the new school. The total budget of the project is estimated at 8 million baht (approx Sing$350,000; $Aud 280,000). The project will be placed under the authority and ownership of the Dek Chalard (Smart Kids) Foundation which is currently being registered in Thailand.

We thank all of you who have been alongside us on this journey of faith over the last few years.  Now that the vision is nearing fruition, we ask for your prayerful financial support to ensure that this project can be realized for the benefit of the children of Phrao.
